HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. When HIV is present in the body, it progressively weakens your natural defenses (the immune system), eventually destroying them and making it easier to get sick. During this time, there are no visible symptoms to indicate the presence of HIV in the body. From the time a person contracts the HIV virus, they can transmit it to others if they don´t use condoms.
The group of illnesses (called opportunistic infections) that attack your body when it no longer has defenses, is called AIDS, or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
Seronegative is when you don´t have the HIV virus.
Seropositive is when you do have the HIV virus.
When the disease develops, a person who has it is called an AIDS patient.
